12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup - It is a slave narrative of a black man who was born free in New York state but kidnapped in Washington, D.C., sold into slavery, and kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana. He provided details of slave markets in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, as well as describing at length cotton and sugar cultivation on major plantations in Louisiana.

I rated this book 3.5/5 stars

I had this book on my TBR shelf for 2 years. I think I never read it because it is such a powerful title, I could tell just by reading the title, and I thought I needed to wait till I could fully commit and invest into this book. As I am still quarantined and everything that is happening all over the world with the racial injustices, I thought it would be a good time to educate myself and I thought that reading a book about slavery would really help me to at least try and understand what many people´s ancestors have unfortunately gone through. Please recommend me some books as I am trying to get more books with diverse characters and also diverse authors!! The first few pages were very confusing to me because so many characters, characters backstories and locations were revealed but I did catch up. I think this book was excellent to educate myself and I really really REALLY recommend that people, especially white people, so that we can all understand what people have gone through, purely because of what colour their skin was. This is a powerful book, a VERY heart-wrenching book and it just made me so mad how despicably these people were treated. I felt so sorry for all of them but especially Patsey because SHE WAS TREATED SO BAD FOR SOMETHING SHE DIDN´T EVEN DO AND IT WASN´T HER FAULT THAT MRS. EPPS WAS JEALOUS OF HER.
